Pre-CD

The Blackburn plant initially opened as a LaserDisc manufacturing facility in 1980.

Bronzing

During the early 1990s, CDs manufactured at PDO Blackburn began using a new reflective coating that was made with silver rather than the usual aluminum. Over time, this coating tended to change tint from silver to a yellowish-bronze, and in many cases deteriorated further to a deep copper hue that made the affected disc difficult or impossible to play. The phenomenon became known as bronzing.
