'/. _____ ___ .\' \|/ \ \ // \|/ \|/ \ \// \|/ _\| | | |/_ _\| _|__|_ |/_ _\\_. ._//_ The Y E L L O Mailing List ABOUT THIS MESSAGE ------------------ This is the introductory message for the "yello" electronic mailing list. Please read this message carefully before joining and/or posting to the list; it contains information about list etiquette and instructions on using the mailing list software. (If you're new to mailing lists, you may wish to keep a copy of this message around for future reference.) If you ever need to retrieve another copy of this message, email majordomo@lists.xmission.com with the command "info yello" in the body of the message. It is also available at Lazlo's Mailing List Page (http://www.studio-nibble.com/lists). WHAT THIS LIST IS ABOUT ----------------------- The Yello Mailing List is a forum for discussions about the Swiss duo Dieter Meier and Boris Blank, a.k.a. "Yello". Lazlo's Mailing List Page (http://www.studio-nibble.com/lists) has links to online resources that are related to the lists he runs (FAQs, posting archives, discographies, etc.). Please become familiar with these resources -- by using them you may be able to find the answers to some kinds of questions without having to ask the hundreds of people on the list. HOW TO SUBSCRIBE AND UNSUBSCRIBE -------------------------------- To join "yello," send email to majordomo@lists.xmission.com with the command "subscribe yello" (without quotes) in the body of the message. You will recieve a confirmation message and a copy of this information file. Once you are subscribed, you will recieve each message as it is posted to the list. A digest version of "yello" is also available. If you subscribe to the digest you will recieve groups of postings in a single email message instead of one at a time. These "digests" are sent out whenever there is a certain amount of text in the queue. It is usually best to try the regular version of the list first and then switch to the digest if you are getting more mail from the regular version that you can deal with comfortably. To subscribe to the digest, email majordomo@lists.xmission.com with the command "subscribe yello-digest" (again, with no quotes) in the body of the message. To leave the list, send email to majordomo@lists.xmission.com with the command "unsubscribe yello" or "unsubscribe yello-digest" (as appropriate) in the body of the message. If you have trouble unsubscribing, send email describing the problem in detail (what commands you sent, what you got back if anything, etc.) to owner-yello@lists.xmission.com. PLEASE DO NOT MAIL "UNSUBSCRIBE" REQUESTS TO THE LIST. Mail to the list may take a few days to get my attention, but mail to owner-yello is always dealt with as soon as possible. To switch from the digest version of the list to the regular version, or vice-versa, you much first unsubscribe from the version you're on and subscribe to the other version as detailed above. Majordomo does not have a command that toggles digest status. Remember: problems with your subscription should be reported to owner-yello@xmission.com, not to the list itself. FILTERING LIST MESSAGES ----------------------- If you are using some kind of mail filters to keep your mailbox under control, you can filter mail from the yello list by looking for the header: Sender: owner-yello@lists.xmission.com All list messages will contain this header. USING THE LIST -------------- All postings to the list should go to yello@lists.xmission.com whether you're on the regular or digest version of the list. Message sent to this address will immediately be forwarded to all members of the list, and will be queued for the next digest. (Please note that Majordomo will check to make sure that you are a list subscriber before passing your message to the list -- you should send messages from the account you used to subscribe to the list, otherwise your mail will be delayed until the list admin can forward it.) New members are encouraged to introduce themselves. When you join, please send a message to the list describing (in brief) who you are and your interest in the list's topic. Please remember that ALL requests to join or leave the list should be mailed to majordomo@lists.xmission.com, not the list itself. If your requests don't seem to be working for some reason, please email owner-yello@lists.xmission.com with a description of the problem. The messages you send to the list will be going to hundreds of other people. For their convenience you should try to follow the usual rules of list courtesy: * Avoid long signatures (four lines is a good size). * Trim down quotations from postings you are responding to. * Think twice before posting extremely long messages. * Try to stay on-topic whenever possible. The list manager has final say on whether a topic is welcome on the list; please do your best to follow his guidance. * Do not crosspost messages between this list and other mailing lists, even if you are subscribed to both. People who are not subscribed to both lists may have difficulty posting their responses to the message. * Do not repost messages from this list to other forums without first getting permission from the person who wrote that message. * If you send mail to the list using Netscape, Microsoft Mail, or other similar products, make sure your software is configured not to include attachments in your messages. HTML content, rich text, and other similar inclusions should not be posted. * If someone else is misbehaving on the list, please EMAIL THE LIST OWNER (owner-yello@lists.xmission.com). Do NOT try to deal with the situation yourself; this almost always results in more problems than it solves. The following kinds of messages are *never* welcome on the list -- posting them may result in your being banned from posting or removed from the list. * Flames and/or attacks on other list members * Advertisements for things not directly related to the list's topic * Chain letters * Virus warnings and other "public service announcements" * Images and sound files (contact the list admin if you have materials to share with the list; he can put them on the list archives) * Hoaxes and forged email * Private email that you don't have the original sender's permission to repost to the list The list is not meant to be used as an advertising forum, though short notices of the form "I have for sale; please email me for a full list" are acceptable as long as the items for sale are directly relevant to the topic of the mailing list. The list software watches for certain kinds of "problem" postings (such as messages with MIME content or too much quoted text) and will either return the message to you with an explanation or forward it to the list owner for manual approval. If your message does not appear on the list in a reasonable amount of time, this is likely what has happened. Email the list owner (owner-yello@lists.xmission.com) if you have any questions about a missing message. This contents of this mailing list may not be archived or redistributed in any way without the express permission of the list owner, unless you are a subscriber archiving the contents of the list for your own personal use only. This list is managed by Lazlo Nibble (lazlo@studio-nibble.com, a.k.a. Ernie Longmire) and is operated from lists.xmission.com thanks to the generous assistance of Pete Ashdown. Thanks for reading this far. I hope you enjoy the list! -- Lazlo Nibble - lazlo@studio-nibble.com - http://www.studio-nibble.com --
